When Major Karen Koenig retired from the U.S. Air Force after 26 years of service, she didn’t walk away from leadership—she simply redefined it. Trading in her uniform for a new kind of mission, Karen founded KK Financial Solutions, a boutique financial advisory firm focused on helping women, divorcees, and small business owners take charge of their financial futures. Her story is one of transformation, resilience, and purpose, and it’s a testament to what’s possible when experience meets passion.
After her Air Force service, Karen found her true calling as a financial planner and the founder of KK Financial Solutions. She empowers business owners, entrepreneurs, and individuals going through critical life transitions such as divorce or retirement. She uplifts the quality of their financial management with tailored strategies and money mindset coaching. Karen’s mission is to make clients understand and implement the right financial strategy for their family and business, and to grow their money using principles beyond the traditional 401(k), IRA, and ROTH.
Raised in a military family in Nebraska, Karen always knew she wanted to serve. At 21, she enlisted in the Air National Guard as an Electronic Mechanic, later earning her commission and rising to the rank of Major. Her time in uniform taught her the value of discipline, service, and systems thinking. She led diverse teams, navigated high-stakes logistics, and deployed to Diego Garcia in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom.
It was during that deployment, while overseeing 24-hour bomber missions, that Karen implemented a cost-saving initiative replacing bottled water with reusable containers, ultimately saving the Air Force over $100,000 annually. Karen shares that this experience shaped her understanding of leadership, teaching her that true impact comes not from rank or authority, but from finding practical solutions that uplift others and improve systems. This mindset became the foundation of KK Financial Solutions, where every financial plan is designed with purpose, empathy, and a drive to serve.
Founded in 2021, KK Financial Solutions delivers personalized financial planning rooted in clarity, education, and empathy. But it’s more than a business—it’s Karen’s way of continuing her mission to serve.
“I didn’t name the company after myself just to brand it. I did it because I take full responsibility for the advice and care we provide. When clients reach out, they’re working with someone who stands behind every recommendation,” she says.
Karen’s transition from military service to finance wasn’t as unlikely as it seems. The qualities that made her successful in the Air Force—integrity, adaptability, and a sharp strategic mind—are the same traits that now guide her work with clients.
Karen specializes in helping women navigate major life transitions, particularly divorce and retirement. These are often the times when women need the most support, and this is where KK Financial Solutions makes a difference. Drawing from her own divorce experience, Karen brings not just financial expertise but emotional intelligence to her planning sessions.
Karen says, “I know what it’s like to start over financially. You don’t just need spreadsheets. You need someone to listen and help you rebuild. That’s why empathy is just as important as strategy.” This reflects the depth of her empathy. Her Divorce Prep Checklist has become one of her most requested tools, offering clarity and peace of mind in a typically overwhelming season.
At KK Financial Solutions, clients aren’t handed plans—they’re invited into conversations. Whether it’s through a custom investment strategy or a budgeting tool like her SMART Goals Worksheet, Karen empowers her clients to take ownership of their financial lives. Her impact is visible. One client who previously dipped into her 401(k) each month now follows a sustainable plan and hasn’t touched her retirement fund in nearly a year. “That’s what success looks like,” Karen says. She adds, “It’s not flashy. It’s sustainable, steady progress.”
Karen is also the author of Woman On Top: How to Win in a Woman’s Way, a book that challenges outdated notions of leadership.
This book offers various practical strategies for women involved in business. It is power-packed with engaging stories of women who made a difference in male-dominated industries with actions that ensured progress. The book doesn’t preach chasing power; instead, it guides women to own their ability with grace and lead the way for others with confidence.
“We’re told to succeed by mimicking men,” Karen says. She adds, “I believe our natural traits—intuition, collaboration, long-term thinking—are our strengths. We don’t need to change who we are to lead. We need to lean into it.”
A sequel to Woman On Top is in the works, tracking the evolution of the women featured in the original book. She also envisions a resource hub with tools for women navigating transitions, from career changes to caregiving.
Beyond her firm, Karen serves as Director-at-Large for Media at the Non-Commissioned Officer Academy Graduates Association (NCOAGA), a non-profit providing educational scholarships, encouraging, assisting, and preparing enlisted members for all levels of developmental education. She also partners with Purse Strings, an organization dedicated to equipping women with financial education. Through their platform, she has delivered free webinars on retirement readiness, reverse mortgages, types of divorce, and most recently, the often-overlooked mental labor women carry around money.
“My most recent webinar focused on the invisible financial workload women manage—bill tracking, budget oversight, family expenses—and how we can reduce that load through automation and shared systems,” Karen explains. She insists, “It’s not just about saving time. It’s about reclaiming mental space.”
In a world that often underestimates women, especially when it comes to money, Karen isn’t just changing the narrative. She’s rewriting it.
Karen is clear that growth will never come at the expense of her values. “We’re not here to sell products. We’re here to build trust,” she says. She believes that values, education, integrity, service, and empowerment are the driving principles that guide everything they do.
To Karen, leadership isn’t about being the loudest in the room. “It’s about asking better questions, listening more than you speak, and remaining teachable,” she says. Karen comments that this is the only way one can grow as well as serve others.
When asked what advice she’d give to someone afraid to start over, she doesn’t hesitate: she advises starting even when things feel messy or uncertain. She insists that the most important thing is to start. She goes on to say that while fear of failure is real, staying stuck can be worse. She shares that everything she has built is the result of failing first and figuring it out afterward. With this piece of advice, Karen urges aspiring entrepreneurs to start, to begin amidst all odds.
From her days as an Air Force Major to her role as a financial strategist, Karen Koenig’s mission remains clear: to serve with integrity, lead with clarity, and empower others to rise.
Karen’s leadership style is rooted in accessibility. “I want clients to feel like they can ask anything,” she says. She emphasizes that there is no judgment toward her clients and reinstates that financial confidence begins with understanding. Her webinars, resources, and one-on-one consultations all reflect this ethos.
Karen believes the core philosophy is that one doesn’t need to be perfect—only to have a plan. That’s something she learned through experience. After failing the Series 7 exam twice, she nearly gave up. “I was embarrassed. I wanted to quit. But I reached out for help, tried again, and passed,” she says. She adds that this experience taught her that the only way forward is through.
Karen’s five guiding principles are as follows:
These principles are now pillars in her coaching and speaking engagements. Looking ahead, Karen plans to expand KK Financial Solutions’ digital education offerings and community outreach.
With her unwavering focus and strong leadership, Karen is poised to reach even greater heights as a leading woman entrepreneur. Karen’s mission to provide financial clarity to the general public, along with her prioritized services for women, will continue to shine the light of hope and financial freedom for decades to come.
