Join us for an impactful conversation as we delve into the transformative power of AI in healthcare with Michael Wilkinson, CEO of Inavya Ventures, a visionary leader at the forefront of revolutionizing patient care.

1. What motivated you to found Inavya Ventures, and what problem or opportunity in the healthcare industry did you hope to address through your company?

My journey in healthcare began with clinical work in Chicago, followed by public health research in London. During this time, I observed a concerning trend: many patients, including my own brother, struggled to adhere to their care plans, leading to declining health, hospital readmissions, and escalating healthcare costs. Conversely, another brother thrived due to his resilience intelligence and agency. This disparity sparked a question within me: could technology be harnessed to enhance resilience capabilities in patients?

This challenge became the catalyst for founding Inavya in London in 2015 with Aleardo Furlani. Leveraging our international experience, networks, and expertise in AI, healthcare, and innovation, we secured our first R&D grant in 2015, supported by the UK government and Deepbridge Capital. This grant enabled the development of the “Avatr” platform, inspired by Sanskrit philosophical principles.

Avatr is a mobile app that empowers users by providing personalized healthcare through data-driven insights and advanced AI tools. Recognizing the need to connect data, technology, and insights to manage chronic diseases – which account for approximately 80% of global healthcare costs – we developed Avatr to address this gap. Clinicians and researchers sought our expertise to optimize outpatient care using teams of synthetic experts.

In collaboration with Microsoft, we introduced Agentic Retrieval-Augmented Generation (RAG), enhancing human teams’ capabilities through Avatr Experts-as-a-Service. Inavya’s innovation orchestrates Semantic, Knowledge Graph, Machine Learning, and Agentic RAG technologies to streamline processes, improve decision-making, and transform the future of healthcare.

2. What are your thoughts on the recent collaboration between Inavya and HealthSum, and how do you perceive this collaboration will change the healthcare industry?

I firmly believe that our partnership with HealthSum is a game-changer for transforming healthcare in underserved areas. By integrating Inavya’s Avatr AI platform with HealthSum’s decentralized Electronic Health Record (EHR) and Micro Cloud, we’re pioneering a new approach that democratizes healthcare access, scales precision medicine, enhances sustainability, and fosters innovation in clinical research.

Key benefits of this collaboration include:

  • Improved Uptime: HealthSum’s Micro Cloud keeps critical applications operational during network disruptions.
  • Optimized Resource Use: Local data processing reduces bandwidth dependency and central server load, syncing only essential data.
  • Enhanced Security: Local processing minimizes the risk of exposing sensitive patient information, increasing privacy.

Micro Kubernetes (mk8s) offers cloud-like functionality to local nodes, enabling compute-intensive tasks and resilience against failures. This open-source technology enhances scalability by dynamically allocating resources and maintaining operations during issues. By integrating mk8s, Micro Clouds bridge traditional cloud computing with edge deployments, ensuring robust performance in remote areas. Local data processing reduces bandwidth reliance, enhances patient data security, and provides clinicians timely access to insights.

4. How will the strategic partnership with the University of Oslo’s DHIS2 platform affect healthcare globally, and what specific advantages will likely emerge from it?

Inavya, HealthSum, and the University of Oslo are collaborating to integrate an AI-enabled patient portal into the DHIS2 platform, which is used in over 80 countries for health data management. HealthSum’s Micro Cloud architecture allows local health systems to function even with limited connectivity, improving real-time data access and analytics. Key advantages include:

• Improved Data Integration: The partnership facilitates seamless data flow between patient-level insights and aggregated health metrics, strengthening health program monitoring and evaluation.
• Capacity Building: By integrating HealthSum’s scalable Micro Cloud infrastructure, the partnership supports training and healthcare service delivery in low—and middle-income countries (LMICs), expanding local expertise and resources.
• Informed Public Health Responses: Combining DHIS2’s analytics with HealthSum’s real-time capabilities enables targeted interventions for disease outbreaks, better resource allocation, and informed policy-making.

5. Explain how Inavya’s technology could integrate with other emerging healthcare solutions, such as telemedicine and wearable devices.

Inavya’s Avatr platform integrates with wearables and hospital healthcare record systems, providing significant real-world capability to improve personalized healthcare services at scale.

Enhancement: Avatr enhances its capabilities by integrating wearables like fitness trackers and glucose monitors, enabling continuous data collection and real-time health monitoring. Predictive analytics can identify abnormalities, such as irregular heart rhythms, facilitating timely interventions. Including emerging lab test data—like radiography, blood analyses, and DNA sequencing—boosts Avatr’s precision medicine capabilities. This diverse data refines algorithms, resulting in more accurate diagnoses and tailored treatment plans, ultimately enhancing patient outcomes across various medical specialities.
