Join us for an engaging discussion with Carrie Thomas, the Founder of Nimbus HR Solutions, as she shares innovative insights related to the field of human resources management.
Throughout my career, I’ve seen the full spectrum of HR—from the ineffective and impersonal to the truly transformational. I’ve experienced bad HR as an employee. And as a consultant, I’ve spent too much time fixing the damage left by well-intentioned but poorly executed HR strategies.
These experiences inspired me to disrupt the traditional perception of “Human Resources”—one company at a time. I founded Nimbus HR Solutions Group Inc. to offer small and mid-sized businesses access to a full-service HR department. Our mission is simple: to deliver service excellence and practical, people-first solutions that actually work, and demonstrate an ROI.
Founding Nimbus was both a purpose and a passion. When I started, I wanted to disrupt traditional HR and put the power of a full-service HR department into the hands of the small to mid-sized business owner. SMB’s don’t have the overhead to justify a full time HR role, and usually pass off the HR function to an office manager or finance. Nimbus was created to be that “better way” – a shining cloud (as the name implies) that surrounds organizations with practical, scalable infrastructure, genuine support, and risk mitigation strategies that protect and empower.
The work has been incredibly rewarding. I’ve had the privilege of supporting global brands through high-growth and high-stakes transitions, and I’ve applied those lessons to help small and mid-sized businesses access the same level of HR expertise -without the overhead. The goal has always been to ensure they are not only protected but also positioned for long-term sustainability.
I’ve also worked to build a team that shares these values; professionals who are passionate about HR, dedicated to getting it right, and focused on delivering timely, impactful solutions. The journey of Nimbus has been about more than building a company – its’ been about creating a movement. One that redefines HR as a strategic, supportive force in business. And we’re just getting started.
At Nimbus, we don’t deliver one-size-fits-all HR. Our approach is rooted in deeply understanding the human systems within a workplace, and then designing interventions that are practical, scalable, and aligned with our clients’ business goals. We don’t just provide advice—we embed ourselves as trusted partners, guiding businesses through the full lifecycle of people operations. Unlike firms that hand over templated policies or canned advice, we ensure that what we build is actually implemented, adopted, and effective. We’re not just consultants—we’re your outsourced HR department, on demand.
My early career included both internal HR leadership roles and external consulting, which gave me a unique view into what works—and what doesn’t. I’ve supported global brands during periods of extreme growth and helped companies navigate downsizing with empathy and legal precision. These pivotal experiences revealed how HR can either be a strategic asset or a massive liability. I have a degree in Human Systems Intervention, post grad certificates in Coaching Individual and Team Effectiveness, which give me a systems-thinking lens when solving organizational challenges. Becoming an entrepreneur felt like a natural next step—one where I could blend empathy with execution and help others succeed on their own terms.
Nimbus offers full-spectrum HR services designed for small to mid-sized businesses. Our core offerings include:
All of this is delivered through our “HR on Demand” model, which ensures expert support is always within reach—without the full-time overhead.
Additionally, we have a partnership with Hucama Analytics, an evidence based, cutting edge HR tool based on the Big 5 Model of workplace psychology. This tool integrates leading science and practice in personality, ability and competency assessment to power interventions across the employee life cycle.
My academic background is in Human Systems Intervention, and that discipline helped me see workplaces as dynamic ecosystems. I’ve always been fascinated by how people interact, what motivates them, and how leadership and structure can either enhance or limit success. HR became the perfect field to apply those insights. Done right, it’s one of the most powerful levers a business has to create healthy cultures and drive sustainable performance.
“HR on Demand” emerged from listening to what small business owners really needed: expertise, flexibility, and responsiveness. They didn’t want static contracts or slow turnaround times—they needed HR help in real-time. So, I created a model that allows clients to tap into our full-service HR team whenever they need it, with solutions tailored to their stage of growth. It’s been incredibly successful because it meets businesses where they are, and scales with them. Our clients love that our consultants are true business partners they can trust.
While our sweet spot is small to mid-sized businesses, we’ve worked with companies of all sizes—from lean start-ups to international brands. What sets us apart is our ability to deliver big-company HR expertise at a small-business price point. We design our services to be accessible, flexible, and high-impact. While we prefer our retainer based services with the long term relationships, many times we have supported one-time projects. In all cases, we tailor our work to fit the budget and scope.
One major challenge is the misconception that HR is just “policies and paperwork.” In truth, HR is a strategic function that drives performance, mitigates risk, and builds culture. Another issue is poor implementation—great strategies often fall flat because no one knows how to execute them. And lastly, small businesses often ignore HR until something goes wrong, which can be costly. Education, proactive support, and leadership alignment are key to solving these issues.
It feels empowering—but also humbling. Success isn’t just about building a business, it’s about impact. I’m proud of what Nimbus has become, and of the opportunities we’ve created for others. My advice to aspiring female entrepreneurs comes from my experience as a competitive equestrian: if you fall down 7 times, get up 8. Trust your gut, know your worth, and surround yourself with people who believe in your vision. And don’t be afraid to disrupt the status quo—your perspective is your power.
Authenticity, service excellence, strategic thinking, and partnership. We operate with integrity, deliver work that matters, and always put people first—both our clients and our team. We are human beings, having human experiences in a human system. We need to be wholistic in our approach. We believe HR should be a force for good and that it should enable—not restrict—business success.
Absolutely. In today’s workplace, HR is no longer just about compliance—it’s about culture, engagement, and leadership. The companies that thrive are those that recognize people as their greatest asset. As work environments become more complex and remote, HR’s role in shaping trust, communication, and belonging becomes even more critical.
The future for Nimbus is about continued growth—both in reach and impact. We have key partnerships that expand our depth and breadth of practice. We’re exploring new tech tools to streamline HR delivery, expanding our leadership coaching programs, and launching sector-specific HR toolkits for industries like tech and non-profit. Ultimately, our goal is to become the go-to HR partner for small businesses, globally.
Oh gosh. It’s an incredible privilege. As I mentioned before, we are all human beings having a human experience. I take the responsibility of leadership seriously, and I try to lead with clarity, humility, and heart. I believe great leaders lift others up, create space for their teams to shine, and support employees in the pursuit of their own dreams. A successful and essential company is one built on trust, shared purpose, and a relentless commitment to doing the right thing—even when it’s hard. That’s what I strive to model every day at Nimbus.
